Last night in Deltaville I did some baking – the pumpkin bread was a nice addition this morning as we left our calm marina. I also made a quick snack of plantains – warm and yummy!! This morning worked a little different with the wind than we thought – it was calmer in the morning than after lunch. This was due to the west wind working at cross purposes to the tide. We had slack tide when we started this morning and it was a…Continue Reading “Out of Fuel in Norfolk Harbor”
This morning was really cold but promised to be a sunny day so we took off from our quite, calm Back Creek in Solomons Island area and headed out to the Chesapeake Bay. The wind predictions indicated the wind would be from the north around 10-15, but the tide was coming up the Bay… this meant that although the wind would push us, it would be choppy… and we would fight against the flood tide. We typically put our sails up in the inlet or…Continue Reading “Not all fun and games”
Morning was still stormy but the clouds cleared and eventually the sun came out. We spent the morning calling marinas in Charleston area to get dockage for a month from Nov 15- Dec 15th. Wow, some of the marinas were really expensive – costing upwards of $1600 and more for the month. We finally found a more reasonable marina – Cooper Marina – that has good reviews. We will need to the leave the boat for our time at the cabin in central PA with…Continue Reading “The Calvert Marine Museum”
We had an awesome night at anchor! Very calm and quiet all night! This morning we headed back over to Galesville to dock at a restaurant where we were meeting friends, Jim and Anne Gossard for lunch. Jim and Ann Gossard are friends of Stew’s through his film work. Jim directed and produced a documentary still in post production named “Divine Instinct” about a Venango, PA artist, Gary Spinosa. Stew was the Director of Photography on the film. We sat at lunch for several hours…Continue Reading “Meeting up with Friends”
We stayed an additional night at the Hartge Marina – rained all day Saturday! We did a little cleaning, but mostly watched videos and talked to friends and family. It is good to have a day like that every now and then. The storm was pretty vicious and it was really hitting the boat and hitting us into the dock. The strong winds and waves hit the stern of the boat and made loud slamming noises most of the day. Had we been turned with…Continue Reading “Another engine problem”
This morning there was little to no fog for the first time in almost a week! This meant we could get going right away. We decided we would head to the west side of the Chesapeake River and find an anchorage somewhere south of Annapolis. We might have thought about stopping in Annapolis, but with Covid having increased in MD it did not seem a wise move. In addition, everything is always closed. We are actually OK with not stopping- we want to keep moving…Continue Reading “Return to Galesville”
We started the morning with fog again!! So thick, hard to believe it can be this thick day after day. I will tell you that everything, I mean EVERYTHING, has a dampness to it. I think this is from the wetness in the air and the condensation. My friend Annette warned me about this… Yesterday when our friends arrive in Chesapeake City there was no room on the dock so we rafted up. This was so cool and worked really well. We had fenders between…Continue Reading “Still Pond Anchorage”
This morning (Wed, Oct 21) we awoke in our anchorage consumed by fog. So much that I was worried about the fishing boats I could hear running into us. The fog was so thick we could not see anything beyond our own rails. Once the fog starting clearing and we could see the sun and shore we decided to take off – probably not the best decision. We sounded the horn and rang the bell every few minutes to be sure any boats around us…Continue Reading “Chesapeake City bound”
Monday we awoke in Utsch Marina after a great nights sleep. We decide to stay today as the wind was not in our favor to round the Cape May point. Most boats use the Cape May canal which is more protected to get to the Delaware river, but due to our mast height we would need to go around. The passage around the point is more precarious due to currents and lots of shoaling (shallow often rocky areas). The wind and tide should be in…Continue Reading “Heading around Cape May”
We slept in a bit as we planned to stay today at Atlantic City. Just as we were getting coffee Dave and Diane texted that the wind was favorable for a jump to Cape May and they would be leaving shortly. When we went to bed the wind prediction for today was out of the south, but this changed and now was out of the East. After some discussion and research Stew and I decided to make the jump as well. We were not excited…Continue Reading “A Cape May Birthday Celebration”
